Dear Subscriber,
A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from a man
named Bud. He had an excellent suggestion for my next
newsletter. Here is what he had to say:
"Since most people don't know how to react to someone
who stutters and certainly don't know what to do
if/when their own child starts stuttering, you can
help some parents and their young children by giving
them the information ahead of time so they are
educated in how to react and what to do. It's sad
that so many of us learn from our mistakes instead of
being educated before we have situations with our own
children."
"Please check out The Stuttering Foundation's website
yourself and share it with your readers so they have
the information they need. I wish I had known about
them many years ago. The website is
www.StutteringHelp.org. You will be helping all of
your readers as well as all the people that stutter
who come in contact with them. You may prevent one of
their children from having to deal with a lifelong
stutter."
So I did check out The Stuttering Foundation's
website, and what I learned was fascinating. For one
thing, look at this brief list of some well-known
individuals who have had to overcome the challenge of
stuttering:
- John Stossel
- Carly Simon
- Winston Churchill
- Annie Glenn
- James Earl Jones
- Marilyn Monroe
- Mel Tillis
- Bill Walton
And the list on their website is about ten times as
long. Right away, that told me that stuttering was a
more common problem than I had been aware. Upon
checking their "Facts About Stuttering" page, I found
that the number of Americans that stutter is actually
over three million, or nearly 1 in every 100. And
over 80% of those affected by stuttering are male.
For parents who think one of their children may be
stuttering, they have a page (http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=151)
to help you determine whether or not they are, and if
so how severe it is.
And in case your child is stuttering, they have an
excellent directory of speech pathologists (http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=109)
for every state in the USA, plus a number of other
countries as well.
There is no miracle cure for stuttering, but it can be
overcome with hard work and dedication on the part of
the parents and children involved. And the earlier
treatment begins, the better.
Whether or not your children have any issues with
stuttering, check out The Stuttering Foundation's
website at www.stutteringhelp.org, and devote at least
a half hour to learning about this important issue.
You never know when it may come in handy, or for whom.
